It is entitled: COSSA COUNTY AND SHELBY COUNTY ALABAMA MCEWEN ROOTS by Francis Nail, Joan Kelley, and Jim Holman. It has John Jr. McEwen as the father of Thomas, but that is not proven altho early research by some family members does point that way. Tom Carothers states that the Alexander the grandson of James and Isabella Miller McEwen married Hannah Fleming--"James & Isabella Miller McEwen did not have a son Thomas , and no where have we ever seen nor heard of her carring the name Sarah. his family and there children are well documented, the family had to prove it's self to collect an inhairidents left to Isabella by her brother David in Scotland.Thier grandson Alex is the son of James & Sarah McKnight McEwen, Alex married Hannah Fleming." Therefore,I have changed my info to reflect what the other researchers of my line have found and what is reflected in Jim Holman's book. He has a great deal more material in the book that I have not copied yet. I am attaching a descendency to this letter to reflect what changes that I have made-altho I am not completely up to date. I noticed that Jim and I have a varience with the death date and interment of James Hill McEwen. I don't know where I go the info that I have, so I will have to check that again and see if James Hill McEwen is actually buried in Causey Chapel Cem. with his wife. Be sure to attach the note that there may be errors in this and that each person should verify the info for themselves. The Birmingham Library (along with many, many other Libraries) have an abundance of reference materials for Ga. and the Carolinas, so at least checking the reference books should not be too hard. The information I have on James Hill McEwen comes from a photostat copy of Alexander McEwen's Family Group Sheet. This was put together by Barbara Sudduth Lyle. She has been involved in genealogy for a number of years and cites her source as J. E. McEwen. This is either Sr. or Jr. with Sr. being the great grandson of James Hill. J. E., Sr. died in 1940 and J. E., Jr. was born in 1912 and may be dead, probably is. As far as addresses on this family I can only look in the McEwen Book and go up the line looking at places of birth, by the way J. E. stands for Jessie Elton. I also have a transcribed copy of a Family Group Sheet on James Hill McEwen given to me by Frances Nail. We probably got Thomas's date wrong. I am looking at the abstract of the will of Thomas McQuown. His statement starts out dated 25 March 1781. Down at the bottom by the names of the witnesses the date is July 1781. I will blame the proofreaders on that one. Information for Alexander came again from his Family Group Sheet by Barbara Sudduth. I thought I had something else but all these piles of paper tend to merge and I will have to look some more. As for the beginning we are not sure that John and John, Jr. even belong. We put our escape clause on the title page. We have had a James McEwen with sons Hugh and Thomas (us) at the top. If we are through James then Hugh will carry the family down to Stonewall Jackson. Really, I consider it bait, hoping someone will come along and say it is right or say it is wrong and show me why. Notes for Zachariah Taylor Mozley: He was in real estate and it is said that he owned Powderly, Alabama. I have not been able to proof that he "owned Powderly", but he did own a great deal of land. He owned a brick making copy in Birmingham. I have the copies of the city directory pages that show this. He was a bachelor. Granddaddy stayed with him when he was young and worked in Birmingham. Uncle Zack donated land to Birmingham on which Cunningham School was built. Cunningham was a black school and now has been torn down. It was located in Avondale. He is buried here in Birmingham. In his will, he left money to his siblings who were living and if they were dead, to their decendants. This actually didn't turn out to have been worth a lot because of the depression, but at one time it would have been worth a great deal. If the heirs had not pushed to have the land sold and the will settled, the land would have undoubtedly been worth a great deal more than it was sold for. A parcel of land that was not sold when his other land was sold after his death, was annexed (?, bought for taxes?) by Elmwood Cemetery. Mama said that she remembered hearling this and thinks that it was in the paper, but no one had the money to redeem the property. He departed Camp Chase, Ohio on May 16, 1865. The horrible conditions at this camp may have been the cause of his early death. This was found on USGENWEB at the Campbell Co., Ga. site: One such prison was Camp Chase near Columbus, Ohio. A confederate soldier confined to this prison, M. A. Ryan, described the conditions as such: Only by spooning two could lie in one bunk. We slept on naked planks, straw being allowed. We were not allowed fires in our store after night. No chairs or benches and when we sat, we sat on the floor. As to our rations...one-half loaf of bread eight inches long divided between eight men, one slice to a man twice a day. USGen Web site, Mrs. Cinda Mosley, owned 120 acres that were worth $700. She apparently lived next door to Isaiah Irvin (listed as J.J. Mosley) who had 200 acres worth $1000. This was the year after James Samuel died. Lucindy was a twin. Her twin sister died and Lucindy's mother told her that she would have all of her years as well as half of her sister's. My mother knew her great-grandmother and has told me many stories. One is that when the war (between the states) broke out, the sheriff, who happened to be Will McGouirk, would come around to conscript men into the Confederate Army and send them off to war. She and James had not been married long and he didn't want to go, so he went and hid in the woods. Her next door neighbor told the officials that he had went to the woods and he was found and sent off to war. Granny was a tiny little thing and did not weigh 100 lbs, soaking wet. She took a fence paling and beat her fat next door neighbor. Some versions of the story say that Granny broke the neighbor's back. When she finished, she dusted her hands off and said "And now, little lady, I'll trust you mind your own business." Granny lost her vision in her old age but she always knew each person's foot step. She would say, "There comes so-and-so." Whoever it was, she always knew in advance. She liked to drink "Kettle Tea" before she went to bed. This concoction was made with hot water and milk and a little sugar. Granddaddy also drank this before he went to bed. Peewee (Henry, Jr.) used to drink this also. Rusty said that his father, Horace, said that Granny would ask for a "toddy" made with whiskey before bed, but I guess that the family had become teetotlers by that time and no one would make her one. Granny's hair was originally red but Granddaddy said that it had turned snow white by the time that she was 21. It swept the floor when she sat down. Mama used to brush it and braid it and then Granny would wrap it around her head. Granny and "Uncle Jim" came to Alabama with Zolpha and Ada when they moved to Nixon Chapel. They came by buckboard with the older children and Ada road the train with Granddaddy, who was just a baby. She brought plants to put out when they got to Nixon Chapel, but they were confisticated at the state line. She asked to keep the Back Walnuts so that she could feed the kids. She planted these nuts and her black walnut tree grew from the nuts that she brought from Georgia. Mama said that the day Granny died, Granny asked her to pick her a cup of her walnuts. She gave Mama a cup and a hammer to crack them with. Mama had just finished putting the last nut in the cup when Granddaddy called her to the house. Mama said that Granddaddy yelled to her, "Marjorie, Granny's dead." Granny also brought a white Lilac and planted it. Mama got cuttings from Virgie who had gotten cuttings from Granny and planted those. Mama also got black walnuts from the tree that Granny planted and planted those at Altoona and grew a tree from them. I have cuttings from this Lilac also, but mine has not bloomed, yet. W. Klein put that the immediate cause of death was Not Known. She died at 3:30 P.M. Granny was actually 97 years, 2 months, and 6 days old when she died. She had lived at Nixon Chapel for 36 years and some months. My mother said that it was probably later than 3:30 P.M. when Granny died. She and Agnes had been to school that day and then stopped to pick up walnuts at Zack's. They had picked the walnuts out of the shells and was giving the hammer and horseshoe nails to Jane when Granddaddy yelled that Granny was dead. Mama grabbed Rosamond and Agnes grabbed Cynthia Ann. Then Jane, Mama, Agnes, and the girls ran to the old home place which was about 1/2 mile from Zack and Jane's house by the road, but less than that across the fields. He invented a medication to treat flu symtoms called Mozley's Lemon Elixer. It was still on the shelves in 1930. He made his fortune with this patented medicine. He donated the land that Mozley Park is on in Atlanta, Georgia. This park is still in use. It is located on what is now Martin Luther King Highway, near Westveiw Cemetery where he is buried. This highway used to be named for Hiram-Mozley Blvd. I haven't found where he went to a Medical College, but he was listed in the DIRECTORY OF GEORGIA PHYSICIANS, 1886, Compiled by Patsy R. Page, Page Publications, Alachua, Fla., 1995., pg. 21. According to the directory he practiced in Atlanta, Fulton Co., Ga. He apparently practiced "eclectic" medicine. Medora was born in Ga. as were her parents. Billie Ruth Mozley Jones said that her father, John Clifford, was born in Horton, Al. and came to Tx. when he was two in a covered wagon. Mozley Succumbs Oct. 27 Isaiah Mozley, 86, died Thursday night, Oct. 27, at his home in Maypearl. Funeral services were held Friday at the Methodist Church, Maypearl, with Rev. Thad E. Son and Rev. Nat Farley officiating. Burial was made at the Maypearl Cem. Mr. Mozley was born April 6, 1852, in Georgia. In early manhood he moved to Alabama; in 1893 he moved to Texas, first settling in Hill Community, then a year later moving to the Ozro community. Within a few years he then moved to what later became the town of Maypearl. In 1876 he was married to Miss Francis Emma Wynn, who preceded him in death in 1925. Mr. Mozley was one of the early pioneers of this community. In 1907 he served as postmaster here; he was at one time a member of the Board of Stewards of the local Methidist Church; he was formerly a director of the local bank. Surviving are four children: I. This letter is dated February 13, 1958. Ruth Blair was the Georgia State Historian at that time. "Since you have been so graciously kind and co-operative, I will tell you why the inquiry. Somehow it concerns my only son, Dr. Paul D. Mozley, Physician, Obstetrician, and Surgeon, U.S. Navy Hospital, San Diago, California. Your letter has been forwarded to the Medical Center, Bethesda, Ma. for photostat. As to the legitimacy of my nativity, that has been legally vouched for years ago by two people: a white man and a Negro woman. The Negro woman was one Mary Mozley Zachary, who was present at the time of my birth. Me, being the second child and only eighteen months younger than my brother, Mary Mozley Zachary and her children helped to care for me. From this, in later life, I learned to appreciate the letter "Z". They carried me, and didn't let me fall; They fed me, and didn't poison me; They taught me, and didn't corrupt me; I learned their dialect, and I learned their fidelity. I have often wondered if they acquired these traits and characteristics from the Mozleys. The man was A.J.Norton, an Uncle of mine, twice removed, who was a decendent of a tribe of the Cherokee Nation, on his mother's side. He was also a cousin to the late Dr. Norton of Atlanta. When the original Mayflower landed, it was my people who met the boat. When another one landed, my people were on that boat. I have always been proud of my heritage on every side. But, I have been a tumble-weed and know but very little about them. In the fourteenth month of my only baby's age, his mother died. While I was trying to get adjusted, it was the Cherokees that sheltered me, but these were the Thompson families. Aunt Mary Thompson, a cousin of Emma Sansom, if you are familiar with the history of 1863, Emma Sansom and General Forrest. They were my people, too. The Cherokees came to me in the hour of my greatest need. I have made application to the Mozleys numerous times during my life and they have been graciously kind and is appreciated more than they will ever know. When I had my office in Bessemer, Alabama, an old Negro man came in to see me, said he was one of Mr. Mozley's slaves. The above mentioned, Mary Mozley Zachary, said her parents were Mr. Mozley's slaves. I do not know which Mozley. I must say that he is the most important man and the most influencial person in my life. He was honest, loving, hardworking, and kind. He was a respecter of women and of people in general. He was VERY opionated about politics and I don't believe that he ever changed his mind about something once it was made up. He could be a hard disciplinarian, he had very high standards of behavior. He expected to be obeyed. First and foremost, he was a gentleman. He loved my Grandmother and he loved his children and grandchildren. I don't believe that he ever had an evil thought. He was a truly good man. When we went to Nixon Chapel for Decoration in 1998, a friend of the family who had known Granddaddy for all of his life, told several stories. One of those happened when his father died and it was winter. He was quite young, maybe only 8, and he was cutting wood. That was a back breaking job for a grown man, but near impossible for an 8 year old. Granddaddy was coming by on his way home and saw him. Granddaddy offered to help and continued to do this for many years. When Granddaddy was being buried, this man said that his best friend had died. Another story that he told was a time when Granddaddy had bought a new denim jacket. He worked at the cotton mill at that time. Somehow his coat got caught in the mechanism that pushed the cotton down into a bundle and started to pull Granddaddy into the machine. Granddaddy caught a bar and held on for his life. The gin pulled the jacket off him by the seams. Every seam in the jacket gave away. The next day Granddaddy took the jacket back to the store and said, "By God, I guess I'll have to buy another new jacket" and proceeded to tell the store owner what happened. The store owner said, "Lowell you can't buy a new jacket, I'll replace this one. Anyone who can survive that deserves a new jacket." No one is quite sure how Granddaddy survived. Another story went around that some boys had cut down some trees and blocked the road as a prank. All the other men got angry and were going to call the law to find out who did it. Granddaddy had a good idea who had done this-maybe he had heard something, anyway, he told the other men that they really didn't want to do that-that it might land awfully close to home. He suffered closed head injury and was taken by ambulance to Holy Name of Jesus Hospital In Gadsden. There he vomited and asperated, and had a respiratory arrest. They revived him and transferred him to Baptist Hospital for a CAT scan. He died in the operating room before they could perform surgery. His vital signs clearly indicated that he was in dire straits but they told mama that he just had a concussion. I lived in Mobile and worked at the University of South Alabama in the Operating Room as a scrub nurse. It was very hard to deal with considering that many with similar injuries survived and even walked out of the hospital. There is much to be said for the "golden hour" in receiving emergency care. James is buried a Nixon Chapel Cemetary in Nixon Chapel, Alabama with my grandfather's parents and his great-grandmother and many other relatives. Grandmother and Granddaddy have gone to be with him.....There is room for all of us there. In one month it will be 13 years since he died and it still grieves me to think about it. (1) Will Magouirk is dead, Uncle Manin Gore, Elecks Irvine killed by lightening, (2) Grandma Higgins died about a month ago. Uncle Asa died about 3 weeks ago, Uncle Martin is dead. Mrs. McEwen, Mr. Jim Carrol, Will Winters, John Noughtman, Hubbert John and Eva Williams , Uncle Jack's first wife Ros is dead, there are a lots more Mr. and Mrs. and Sallie Long is dead, Susan Hutchins. Well, I can't think of anything to write. We had a terrible rain here yesterday ----raining some this morning. You said you was about half done planting corn. Zolpha hasn't planted anything except a roasting ear patch and ribbon cane and garden. My garden was fine and the cows ruoined it. They are going to work at the fence. 9 Heare is a little piece of paper Zolpha set it down and I will just send it to you can keep it till I see if I am rite. Well I will close for this time hoping you wont think hard of me for writing so much. I have set in here and let people tear the phone down ringing but I can't write and fool with ti and Annie is--------on this old organ and Dora is squalling.
